You may have noticed it at the pump, the price of a gallon of gasoline is slowing rising again. According to the AAA's Daily Fuel Gauge Report, the current national average price per gallon of regular gasoline is $2.31. In Connecticut where I live, the price is $2.43 per gallon of regular. I'm guessing President Barack Obama is noticing the rise as well, because on Tuesday he will propose the most aggressive U.S. auto fuel efficiency standards ever.
The new policy takes an aim not only at current fuel standards, but could resolve a dispute with the state of California over cutting tailpipe emissions. As reported by Reuters, speaking to a senior administration official under the condition of anonymity, said average fuel standards for all new light vehicles sold in the United States would rise by 10 miles per gallon over today's performance to 35.5 mpg between 2012-16. Tailpipe emissions would fall by more than 30 percent also, the official said.
Automakers like General Motors Corp and Toyota Motor Corp of Japan, support the plan as do California officials. What remains to be seen is Obama's promise of turning away from traditional fuels like oil and gasoline to alternative fuels like Biodiesel, Hydrogen, Electricity and Natural Gas.
The trend that seems to be happening is low cost of fuel one year, another two to three years of high cost, a figure that is suppose to adjust to supply and demand but doesn't. I'm guessing there will be another spike in the price of gas as we head closer to Memorial Day.
