Rumors of a phone developed by Google (in connection with HTC) have quickly spread across the web. Many Google employees have admitted to the existence of a Google phone and Google, Inc has finally come clean on one of their official blogs.

"At Google, we are constantly experimenting with new products and technologies, and often ask employees to test these products for quick feedback and suggestions for improvements in a process we call dogfooding (from "eating your own dogfood"). Well this holiday season, we are taking dogfooding to a new level.

We recently came up with the concept of a mobile lab, which is a device that combines innovative hardware from a partner with software that runs on Android to experiment with new mobile features and capabilities, and we shared this device with Google employees across the globe. This means they get to test out a new technology and help improve it."

Even though this "dogfooding" is taking place and we may never actually get this implementation of a Google Phone, the point is there IS an actual Google Phone out there. There are many implications a real Google Phone makes, one being that besides the DROID phones Google may one day enter the smartphone market themselves, outside of only providing a mobile OS in Android. I guess Apple won't be releasing half-baked iPhones anymore and may be forced to once again, innovate.

By the way, Google doesn't call the phone the Google Phone.

Update: While surfing the web looking for more news on the "Google Phone", I came upon a website (theunlockr.com) with leaked photos of the early Google Phone that many Google employees are using now. I also have some more information about this phone.

Please note, these are early BETA prototypes and when Google does release this phone to the masses, the design will probably change. The phone will be released sometime next year (probably mid 2010). Unlike most cell phones on the market, the Google phone will NOT be locked to any cell phone companies...it will be unlocked (although it will be GSM).
